Stage 1 of The Waranga Basin Fish Habitat Installation project, has after many years of planning finally been completed, with 50 tonnes of green timber sourced locally attached to 70 concrete blocks deployed during the week of the 9 - 13 Oct. 2023.
These structures were deployed at various depths to accommodate the varying levels of the lake and provide much needed protection for all species of fish, particularly the 750,000 Golden Perch fingerlings to be released over the next 3 years. These fingerlings require this type of habitat structure to survive their first 12 months in the lake.
Following key objectives identified during the consultation for the 2011 LOWMP for the Waranga Basin, the program has begun in a stretch of water in the Waranga Basin, located in North Central Victoria.
The steering committee of the Goulburn Valley Association of Angling Clubs, would like to thank Victorian Fisheries Authority, Better Boating Victoria, Goulburn Murray Water, The Wedge Group, Xtreme Marine Echuca, Shire of Campaspe, Nathalia Angling Club and Kyabram Anglers for their invaluable contribution in making this great project possible.

The above listed entities and organizations have well combined logistically to deliver this fantastic projfect. There was indeed much planning, fair compromise and sciences afforded to this task which was superbly delivered within the timeframe and on budget.Mention could also be made of the skilled plant operators part in assembling the โHabitat/ Hidesโ. May the many individuals from all sectors who selflessly contributed to this Task..take a bow !
