Picola Silo Art

Looking for something to do locally as the weather cools down? Why not jump in the car with the heater on and visit the Picola silo art. A painting of the Superb Parrot! While you're out there pop across the road to the Picola Hotel for some lunch and a coffee!

A little history on Picola and this project - Picola is a small farming community with a population of approximately 330 people, located in northern Victoria. As you enter this small country town you will notice a beautiful mural on the metal silo. The Mural was painted by Melbourne based artist Jimmy DVate in 2020. Jimmy has a talent for large scale paintings and a passion for nature and the environment. He was an obvious choice to paint the first mural in Picola as the mural features many local flora and fauna that you would most likely see on a visit to the nearby Barmah forest. Some of the things you will see included in the mural are our local kangaroos and brumbies as well as the Eastern Great Egret. A scar tree is also included in the mural to recognise the occupation of the indigenous people who lived in the area prior to settlement.

If you look carefully at the silo mural you may be lucky enough to spot the 'hook'. A wayward fishing hook has been included in the painting as a reference back to the past. Picola was nicknamed 'The Hook' in the early days of the railways coming to town because it was 'on the end of the line'. Make sure you have a look for it!

The nearby Barmah National Park has had a long association with Picola as the local timber industry relied on the timber mills and railway connections to Picola.

Located in the centre of town is the Picola Heritage Park. This well maintained park features:

  • Gazebo

  • BBQ and Picnic Facilities

  • Playground

  • Toilet Facilities

  • Setting of Native Garden

  • Signboards that tell the Story of Picola's Heritage

More information can be found at the Barmah Forest Heritage and Education Centre located in Nathalia.
