"Looking For Something Else": A Captivating Journey of Self-Discovery.

Local singer/songwriter Jessica Lorraine releases her debut album, ‘Looking For Something Else’ on Friday June 14th 2024. An introspective eight-song record woven with themes of searching, heartache, growing and gratitude.

Sparked by self expression and discovery, Jessica’s heart-on-sleeve songwriting and earthy-rich vocals will take you on a journey of vulnerability. Born over a tumultuous few years starting in 2020, ‘Looking For Something Else’ endured multiple postponements - including an almost year long hiatus between recording dates. Within that extra space the album naturally deepened, capturing the raw emotions of the time. Every song written solely by Jessica in the home she grew up in. Produced by Josh Barber (Gretta Ray, Gotye), it is equal parts compelling, thoughtful, eclectic and heartwarming, blending influences of alt-country, folk and pop.

Opening track and July 2023 single Same Old Songs lures you in with Jessica’s raw vocal prowess and natural lyrical instinct on display, with lucious instrumentation featuring moody guitar & pedal steel from Matt Dixon (The Teskey Brothers, Gretta Ziller). Capturing attention on Triple J Unearthed, Kath Devaney of ABC Country said “Scorching vocal with just the right amount of percussion tempered with gentle reverb. Delectable and powerful, my favourite combo. Jessica is a voice and name you'll want to know.”

Thinking of You on the other hand (released in March 2023) is a contemporary story of unrequited affection, delving into the bitter-sweet, topsy-turvy feeling of having someone stuck on your mind and wondering if you’re ever on theirs. Starting out intimately with acoustic guitar behind a gentle vocal, showcasing Jessica’s solo acoustic roots, this song builds into a bursting country infused alt-indie-pop ballad.

Jessica's latest single, You’re Not The Boy (released May 2024)
explores the intricate emotions of an almost-relationship, where reflection and questioning lead to the realization that the other person was never truly the right fit. Released with an accompanying music video reaching over one thousand views in the first week.

"I wrote these songs through my late teens into early twenties, they’re very much about an overarching sense of searching I felt through that time.”

“The kind of searching that can sometimes become detrimental, looking for something else instead of embracing where you are in life and what’s happening in that moment”

(I think that’s why) “songwriting is such a gift to me, because it’s the one time I find it easy to ground myself in a moment and start to make sense of things.”

“My music is very raw and honest in that way - true to the feelings in a precise moment in time, whatever I’m needing to process.” Jessica says.

Looking For Something Else is written and performed by Jessica Lorraine (Brooks), produced by Josh Barber (Gretta Ray, Gotye), engineered by Fraser Montgomery (Ash Grunwald, Kerryn Fields), mixed by Robert Muinos (Didirri, Little May), mastered by the late John Davis (Lana Del Rey, Haim, Nick Cave).

The album features Josh Barber (drums, keys, additional elements) Matt Dixon (electric guitar, pedal steel) and Claire Cross (electric bass). Recorded at the Aviary Studios in Melbourne & Josh Barber’s converted 1860s chapel studio in Mollongghip, VIC.
